Ghillies Cottage is surrounded by glorious countryside and there are walks that cross by the garden of the cottage up into the hills and over to a lovely loch where it is really nice to take a picnic. |
Drumlanrig Castle and Estate is close by, home of the Duke of Buccleuch the Castle is open to visitors together with the gardens and an adventure playground, a plant nursary a courtyard of small shops and Scotland's cycle museum with lots of mountain bike tracks throughout the forest. |
There are many interesting activities close by and there are a few equestrian centres, perfect for a hack in th country byways |
The fishing is good, the river Nith runs close to Ghillies Cottage and is a great fishing sea salmon and for trout . Also Scaur water flows close by and joins the Nith just a couple of miles away. |

Thornhill has a great golf course. 18 holes, 6085 yards, SSS 70, par 71 - Very attractive layout set in beautiful mid Nithsdale - a mixture of parkland and heathland with spectacular views of the Southern Uplands. At 6085 yards with an SSS of 70 it should be fairly easy for the high handicapper but the course offers a real challenge for the scratch golfer. |
