Our top 5 reasons why you would choose to stay here
On the doorstep are many woodland and riverside walks - follow the farm track down to North Esk and take a picnic to the pond where the children can have endless fun, or enjoy an evening stroll along the river. From the picturesque village of Edzell too there are some lovely river walks which take in views up the Angus Glens, passing the dramatic rapids and waterfalls of a deep gorge. Edzell is the gateway to the Angus Glens and Cairngorm National Park, where you will find a range of walks to suit all ages and inclinations.
This is an excellent spot for fishing. The nearby river North Esk is famous for its excellent migratory salmon and sea trout runs; the season is from 16th February until the 31st October. You can walk from the cottage to Stracathro, Daladies and Pert beats, with figures of up to 400 fish caught per season on a single beat.
The nearest Golf course is Edzell with 18 and 9 hole courses and driving range. 10 miles away is the Links courses at Montrose, which is the 5th oldest golf course in world and boasts two 18-hole courses. The Broomfield course is ideal for families, beginners and juniors or indeed as practice for the beautifully maintained Medal course.
There is no shortage of historic buildings to visit while staying here: the enchanting Edzell Castle, set amid pleasant parkland and gardens, Dunnotter Castle, sitting atop dramatic coastal cliffs, the beautiful Georgian House of Dun at Montrose, stunning Glamis Castle and stately Dunninald House with its wild and formal gardens, are all close by.
A five minute drive from the cottage, Balmakewan Farm Shop has a cafe which is open all day for tasty breakfasts, lunches and teas as well as an excellent shop. Just two miles away in Fettercairn are the Ramsay Arms Hotel and The Arch, serving locally sourced delicious breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks and with a lovely gift shop too. A twenty minute drive will take you to the wonderful Drovers Inn in the attractive village of Memus, where you can take your pick from hearty pub style food or a la carte fine dining. |
