Former farm cottages and steading beautifully converted into luxury holiday cottages with lovely views, near Banchory, Aberdeen

In the heart of Royal Deeside amid long, open views of forests and pasture grazed by the award winning Perkhill cattle, three luxury holiday cottages sit undisturbed in their peaceful, rural setting. The swish of a tail, the gentle chewing of the cud and occasional birdsong are relaxing on the ear; we are certainly away from it all here and the pace of life slows down as soon as we arrive at our lovely holiday cottage in Aberdeenshire.

It is obvious that owners Pippa and Alex take great pride in their well run farm and this extends to the holiday cottages, which have been a labour of love from start to finish - from the initial design to the many green features to the furnishings and decor, they have taken every step to ensure that visitors will enjoy their stay here. We immediately feel welcome as we enter the smart, bright kitchen to find a lovely selection of local eggs, milk and other essentials to start us off catering-wise.

There are three cottages here at Perkhill, all beautifully designed to make guests as comfortable as possible and to make the most of the lovely views. Macbeth's Retreat is a mixture of old and new, part traditional stone cottage and part wooden clad modern build with an attractive, quirky circular living room joining the two. Plentiful windows let in lots of light and there is always a sunny spot somewhere in the house to sit and enjoy the view, from breakfast time to bedtime. My favourite has to be the round room, where I can sink into a comfy leather sofa, put my feet up and enjoy the views from the tall windows over a glass of whisky while the brightly flickering woodstove warms the evening.

As I sit and unwind, subtle touches of local tartan here and there nudge me to look into the history of the place and I discover that there is a connection between the nearby village of Lumphanan and the ancient Scottish kings Malcolm and Macbeth, who battled here long ago in 1057. Shakespeare altered facts and exaggerated characters when writing the Scottish play, but the essential figures did exist and were here near Perkhill, which explains the choice of names for the holiday cottages.

Named after more recent monarchs who used it on the way to Balmoral, the now closed Royal Deeside railway line runs alongside the river from Banchory to Aberdeen and makes a varied and attractive walk/cycle path through quiet fields and woodland and past pretty, old railway buildings. We arrive just at the right time to hop onto the steam train which puffs up and down a mile stretch at the western end of the line, and in need of refueling, call in at Woodend Barn for the most delicious date and walnut cake and excellent coffee in Buchanan Bistro.

When it comes to bedtime, we are in bliss here at Perkhill. In keeping with everything else in the cottage, Pippa and Alex have thought of their guests' comfort and have not stinted on quality; the beds couldn't be more comfortable and couple that fact with plenty of fresh air and quiet, relaxing surroundings and we have the perfect recipe for a wonderful, deep, undisturbed sleep.

hotel There are hundreds of miles of footpaths and tracks in the area offering everything from a gentle stroll to an energetic hike, including a lovely low level walk along the Old Deeside Railway, woodland trails in the grounds Drum and Crathes castles and the wonderful Glen Dye Walk to Clachnaben Summit, with fantastic views from the top, well worth the effort. For another great view, walk the two miles from Balchory to climb Scolty Tower and for a more challenging munro, Lochnagar is the nearest to Perkhill.

Crathes Castle, gifted to the Leys Family by Robert the Bruce, has lovely painted ceilings and fine furniture and is a fine example of Scottish baronial architecture. The gardens have a very varied collection of plants, rare trees and shrubs, as well as woodland walks. Drum Castle is a 13th century tower house, one of the oldest surviving in Scotland, extended in Jacobean and Victorian times. Both are in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Slightly further afield, Balmoral,Craigievar and Braemar are also well worth visiting.

Deeside has several excellent golf courses set in stunning scenery. Banchory, recently extensively remodelled by architect John Souter, has a collection of challenging long holes, as well as the famous Doo-Cot, set above the river bank. Inchmarlo offers two stunning courses as well as a floodlit driving range and fully stocked pro shop. In July the Royal Deeside Golf Classic allows golfers to experience five interesting and challenging golf courses at Banchory, Inchmarlo, Aboyne and Ballater, as well as a fun game at Braemar.

hotel One of Britain's top four salmon rivers, the Dee is internationally famous and more than 10,000 anglers come from all over the world each year to fish it. In addition to the increasing run of spring fish, the river also provides excellent summer fishing for salmon, grilse and sea trout.

For excellent snacks and meals made with local seasonal produce (some from their own allotment) visit Buchanan Bistro at Woodend Barn in nearby Banchory (adjacent to Woodend Theatre). Raemoir Garden Centre has a very popular cafe and restaurant in lovely surroundings. Also highly recommended are the Tornacoille Hotel, Banchory, Sign of the Black Faced Sheep, Aboyne and The Green Inn, Ballater.
