St Andrews is rich in history which is reflected in its historic buildings including the medieval city gate West Port, the 12th/13th century ruined Chapel of St Mary on the Rock, believed to have housed the relics of St Andrew, Blackfriars Chapel, ruined during the Scottish Reformation, the very striking St Andrews Castle and just along the road from the apartment, the university Chapel of St Salvator, a rare and beautiful example of Late Gothic architecture founded in 1450. |

St Andrews is a fascinating place for urban walkers with its harbour, ruined castle and cathedral, fine beaches and interesting old buildings. The Town and Gown tour starts from beside the bus station. The Fife Coastal Path runs from the Forth to the Tay bridges along some of the most beautiful walking coastline in Scotland and has sections of a wide variety of lengths and terrain. The Tourist Information Centre has details of walks. | |
It's easy to eat well without going far: the Russell Hotel is a five minute walk away and does very good bar suppers, while the scenic Seafood Restaurant is excellent for fine dining - again a five minute walk. Playfairs is just across the road and also excellent. For scrumptious takeaway fish and chips, The Tail End is highly recommended. The out of town restaurants are also very good - try The Peat Inn and The Grange - and if you like Thai, then visit the Nahm-Jim, which recently won an award for best Thai restaurant in the UK. |
