Smart, comfortable holiday cottage beside the sea and golf course in North Berwick in the North Berwick.
Sometimes it's good to get right away from it all into the wilderness and sometimes it's fun to be in a city where there's lots of day and evening entertainment - here in North Berwick, we have an excellent combination of beautiful scenery and buzzing culture - the best of both worlds. The town is vibrant with a scenic harbour, an eclectic selection of one-off shops and boutiques, a huge variety of places to find food and entertainment, fantastic golf courses, and amazing beaches.
Best of all, Craigend Cottage is right by the beach and almost on the golf course, so we can step out of the door and amble along the sands - even walk as far as Edinburgh along the coastal path should we so wish. The cottage is bright, cosy and comfortable with plenty of space for six to relax in between rounds of golf, days on the beach or cultural activities. The sunny front rooms face south, and it's fun to sit out on the sheltered patio and enjoy a drink or a bite to eat.
The views across the Firth of Forth to the Bass Rock (known for its seabirds, especially its huge gannet colony) prompt a visit to the Scottish Seabird Centre where we discover that in April, the puffins start to return to the island to nest and breed. The centre offers boat trips with landings on Bass Rock and the Isle of May and if you're lucky enough to come in May, you can experience a ten day Puffin Fest with loads of fun family events including live webcam footage and puffin spotting cruises. There's a good wee cafe here too with a range of vegetarian and gluten free dishes as well as speciality beers.
Golf is the obvious leisure activity while staying here, with the North Berwick course right infront of us but for variety or for non golfers, just along the road from the cottage, the Marine Hotel offers spa facilities and a swimming pool with special rates for us - what a treat to have this on the doorstep - the luxury afternoon tea spa day is a wonderful way to thoroughly relax and spoil yourself with a therapeutic massage and 'tea' with a glass of fizz.
