Beautifully designed eco holiday home in quiet countryside with lovely views.
How pleasing it is to know that we can enjoy a holiday in wonderful comfort, warmth and luxury, with beautiful views and indulgent treats, while at the same time feeling happy that we're making less of a footprint here than we would have if we'd stayed at home...perhaps we should be really kind to the planet and take a permanent holiday here...
Mark and Verity Tuckwood have made a dream eco home on their smallholding in the heart of the Scottish Borders, giving us the opportunity to indulge in a fantastically green, responsible holiday. The Green House is a far cry from an old-fashioned log cabin holiday in Scotland. I'm not knocking log cabins in Scotland - there are some absolutely wonderful old-style cabins in stunning locations - but this is something a bit different, quite individual and definitely very special.
First impressions - the house is attractive and stylish; the warm, amber coloured larch cladding and the pinks, greens and browns of the sedum roof are pleasing to the eye; functional eco equipment such as solar panels are discreetly hidden; attractive decking and an enclosed garden are perfect for outdoor play and relaxation.
It dawns on us as soon as we arrive that all of the benefits of the Good Life await us, but with none of the effort; all we have to do is to enjoy the experience. Divested of all our clobber in the well designed and practical hall, we are greeted by a truly wonderful array of welcome goodies, including home made cake and toiletries, all as local as can be. An additional selection of tasty treats (with honesty box) will be appreciated with enthusiasm throughout our stay. Someone really has put in the hard work on our behalf, making lovely crab apple schnapps, delicious ginger cake and a selection of unusual and tasty preserves.
Relaxing in the living room (warm oak floors and doors, fresh green decor, chic, attractive '70s style furniture) we find out that Passiv Haus technology does work. Even on cold and frosty mornings we don't need the stove to be cosy warm, although it still feels good to have the flames glowing brightly through the glass on occasion. Through the tall picture windows there is always some kind of wildlife to watch - horses in the nearby field, Shetland sheep in shades of brown, cream and grey, myriad varieties of birds, red squirrels and early or late in the day, deer straying from the nearby woods to graze.
For the ultimate eco friendly, responsibly sourced souvenirs to take home, there is no need to go far when we can buy tasty lamb reared here on the smallholding, pure undyed wool from the Shetland sheep and lots of the other goodies that we've tried during our stay. I am so pleased that we've been able to enjoy a brilliant, relaxing holiday while at the same time feeling that we've been kind to the planet in many small but significant ways.
