Black Isle sea view cottages

Traditional Highland self catering cottages with stunning views over the Moray Firth - sleep 5/6/10

Stretching out between the Moray and Beauly firths to the south and the Cromarty firth to the north, the Black Isle is a fertile, sheltered peninsula of rolling hills, deciduous woodland and rugged coastline with a mild, dry climate. In this quiet corner of Scotland a handful of pretty coastal villages is scattered along the coastline and every now and then we pass a farm, but the roads are quiet. It's a short, scenic drive from Inverness, across the Beauly Firth and along the coast until we come to a single track leading to Hillockhead Farm, sitting high above the sea with stunning views all around.

The attractive, traditional farm cottages sit in 160 acres of pasture and woodland overlooking the Moray Firth, are full of character, well equipped and comfortable, perfect for a self catering holiday by the sea. The farmhouse, longhouse and steading can all be booked and although they're in the same vicinity, each has its privacy.

The farmhouse is the largest cottage with four bedrooms and spacious living accommodation, an excellent place for extended family or friends to holiday together, with a family room for four as well as a double with twin attic room above, leaving a further double, perhaps for grandparents. What a treat to relax in the lovely summerhouse admiring the bright blue sea and far mountains while the children run around the garden or splash in the hot tub.

In the pretty, whitewashed longhouse, Juniper Cottage enjoys simlar wonderful sea views from the front; large windows and patio doors in the living room make the most of this. Dolphin Cottage is part of the old stone steading, has great accommodation for five in two bedrooms, with a spacious upstairs living room. Step out onto the south facing balcony to enjoy the spectacular views from this wee sun trap.

We've heard of the Moray Firth dolphins - around 150 bottlenose dolphins which frequent the area - and now we can see them for ourselves. A handy tide table tells us when to look - just after low tide is ideal - and we're told the best spot is Chanonry Point. It's easy to walk to the point and the sight of these enormous dolphins is pure fun - they really do seem to be having a ball as they leap and dive! It's always worth keeping an eye out from the cottages too as they can appear anywhere along the coast here.

On my personal agenda is a tour of the Black Isle Brewery in the south of the peninsula, where a dozen different organic real ales are made. If you like a good stout, don't miss the Black Run, a strong, boozy brew overwintered in whisky casks or, perfect for a summer evening is the refreshing, hoppy Yellowhammer.
