luxury cottages Fort William

Attractive traditional cottage overlooking Loch Linnhe, close to Fort William, sleeps 2/4

**Available from May 2014 - booking now open**

What a spectaular drive, all the way from Crianlarich deep into the heart of the Highlands, through stunning Glen Coe beneath atmospheric mountains, along the side of Loch Linnhe and almost to Fort William and the foot of Ben Nevis, where this romantic cottage is tucked in looking across the loch within its own private garden.

The latest project for John and Joan Campbell, the cottage has just been carefully renovated and finished to a very high five star standard and can now be booked for romantic holidays for one or two couples, or parties requiring two luxury double bedrooms. John is a highly skilled joiner and builder, while Joan's speciality is interior design and they have worked together to make the most beautifully finished luxury holiday home with high quality decor, fittings and furnishings and a cosy, romantic feel.

The neat, smart kitchen is equipped with all the crockery, pots and pans and gadgets we need, with plenty of room for the uniquely stylish dining table and chairs which sit next to the patio doors; out on the patio we can relax with a drink and enjoy the sunset over the loch with its backdrop of stunning mountains.

The same view can be enjoyed from the sitting room where a cosy log fire with a beautiful stone hearth is set neatly into the wall. I love the upholstery which picks up a theme from the dining chairs - an unusual and effective combination of leather and Harris tweed, courtesy of Joan's excellent eye for design.Throughout the house, the decor is stylish and unfussy with a definite feel of quality and luxury, lovely warm solid wood, pale walls and natural colours.

The two bedrooms are equally lovely but quite different in feel and with different bathrooms. Downstairs, the large wood panelled bedroom, furnished with warm oak and tweed has a walk through bathroom with a large shower and beautiful slipper bath (perfect for two) while the upstairs room is light and bright with exposed beams and a colonial feel - its bathroom has a stunning egg-shaped bath (also big enough for two) and large shower. For couples having a romantic holiday by themselves, either room is just perfect and you can choose on booking which you would prefer.

Fort William is a ten minute drive north from the holiday cottage and it's a pleasant stroll along Loch Linnhe for a meal out without the car - on the pier sits the Crannog Seafood Cafe with great loch views and delicious freshly caught local seafood. Aside from the obvious outdoor attractions such as walking, skiing and watersports, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. We took a delightful boat trip from the town pier and a short drive north to the Nevis Mountain Range Experience - a cable car ride with the most spectacular views from 650m up! My favourite excursion is without a doubt the train ride up to Mallaig (May to October). We were lucky enough to ride on the steam train The Jacobite, adding extra atmosphere to an already fantastic journey.

Our top 5 reasons why you would choose to stay at this excellent self catering property
good area for walking and hiking Fort William is at the heart of Lochaber, close to the foot of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak. To the south is Glen Coe, a mecca for hillwalkers and mountaineer, while the other parts of Lochaber are no anti-climax. The region becomes wilder and less visited to the north, culminating in the peninsula of Knoydart, one of the most rugged parts of Britain. There are softer landscapes too, from the popular lochs of the Great Glen to Ardnamurchan and its fabulous sea-scapes.
good area for fishing The Lochaber area has been described by some as a fishing heaven and this can probably be justified by some of the large salmon, trout and ferox trout which have been caught in the lochs and rivers over the years.
good area for walking and hiking Take the train from Fort William to Mallaig and cross the famous Glenfinnan viaduct, an unmistakeable landmark for all Harry Potter fans, on the fictional journey to Hogwarts School. Some of the carriages of The Jacobite are those used in the Harry Potter films.
local watersports available This lovely cosy cottage makes a perfect venue for a romantic break.
hotel There are great restaurants to enjoy: The Smiddy, Inverlochy Castle, The Lime Tree, The Crannog and The Seafood Cafe, to mention a few.
