Speyside holiday cottage

Speyside holiday cottage

Beautifully converted holiday lodge by the river Spey, ideal for country sports or a relaxing holiday, sleeps 6 - 8.

What a find this wonderful place is - it definitely has the wow factor! Recently converted from an ancient mill, no expense has been spared to make this into a truly luxurious hunting lodge style holiday home in an idyllic spot overlooking fields, forests, grouse moors and the Cromdale Hills. Deer and hares are regular visitors to the lodge quadrangle and it's paradise for dogs, with all this space to sniff around and explore, right here from the door.

A short walk across the nearest field and we are greeted by a stunning, unexpected view of the River Spey, a hundred feet below us. There's a scenic riverside walk which is great for easy dog walking and for a longer walk, we can carry on through the woods and join the Speyside Way. There are endless walks starting right from the door; the Ben Rinnes mountain trail is just a few minutes away and a little further afield, the Cairngorms are fantastic for hillwalking.

Inside, this wonderful shooting lodge is elegantly furnished and decorated. Beautiful sporting prints hang on the walls, upholstery and curtains are all done in a luxurious special estate tartan, the floors downstairs are lime-washed solid oak and the windows Norwegian, triple-glazed, looking out on the most delightful views all around. I love the large, unusually shaped windows in the huge kitchen and the wee low windows beside the fireplace, which peep out over the garden. Some fine antiques mingle well with brand new classically designed furniture; all are smart and comfortable.

Upstairs we find sumptuous wool carpets, wonderful comfy beds dressed in fine linen and luxury bathrooms with massive heated towel rails and thick, fluffy towels; all of the bedrooms have fantastic views.

The cottage may have been designed as a shooting lodge and as a haven for River Spey salmon fishers, but it is also perfectly situated for a relaxing break in the countryside, a golfing holiday or a base for enjoying the malt whisky trail. You can walk for miles, fish or canoe on the river and even in winter, there's plenty to do - the ski centre at Aviemore is just a half hour drive away and the local estates offer wintersports such as sledging and snowboarding too.

I would be quite happy not to move from this lovely Scottish holiday lodge in such a beautiful, quiet place - just some riverside walks and a chair by the fire would do me - but I shall have to stir myself to go off in search of new whiskies to enjoy while I watch the flames flicker in the stove in the evening - I still haven't tried them all!

Our top 5 reasons why you would choose to stay at this excellent self catering property
good area for fishing There are numerous scenic forest and country walks straight from the lodge. You can walk across the fields, explore the many forest tracks adjacent to the Lodge, or access the Speyside Way which is just a few minutes away. This world famous trail mainly follows the valley of the River Spey and runs from Buckie on the shore of the Moray Firth, south westwards to Aviemore on the edge of the Cairngorm Mountains.
good area for walking and hiking The River Spey is one of Scotland’s most prolific salmon and sea trout fisheries, attracting fishermen from all over the world. The lodge is situated adjacent to the middle section of the Spey giving easy access to this part of the river and offers perfect accommodation for small groups of fishermen. Rod holders and deep freeze facilities are available and, if required, we can provide picnic hampers so you can spend more time enjoying your sport.
local watersports available We can arrange shooting packages to suit small parties. Opportunities for formal driven shooting will be limited but, for groups of 4 to 6 guns, walked-up game days or shooting over pointers can provide challenging sport with bags of 10 to 50 head. Quarry varies according to season but may include pheasant, partridge, hare, (both grey and white) rabbit, grouse, ducks or woodcock.
good area for fishing There are many excellent golf courses nearby including Ballindalloch (a few minutes drive away) Grantown-on-Spey, Nethy Bridge, Dufftown, and the championship courses of Nairn and Royal Dornoch. All of these offer day and weekly membership with prices per round costing from £10 to £100.
good area for fishing Speyside has many of the world's best known malt whisky distilleries including Benromach, Cardow, Dallas Dhu, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant, Glenlivet, Glen Moray, Strathisla and Glenfarclas. You can visit each distillery, do a spot of tasting and learn how the whisky is made. Some modern distilleries are very hi-tech and resemble a chemical factory whereas other smaller establishments still use the traditional methods to produce an artisan product that varies from year to year.
