Whitefalls Spa Lodges are two modern luxury lodges exclusively for couples, each set in a quiet, secluded spot close to the waterfall which gives them their name, in open countryside with fantastic views over the nearby sea loch to the hills and mountains beyond.

I never thought that a bath would be such a highlight of a holiday, but after the bathing experience at Whitefalls, I understand the potential that this often humble, functional vessel can offer. Put it on a stage, give it a fantastic view towards the glorious rising sun, add sensual, flowing water, therapeutic washes of colour and you have so much more than a place to get clean. This is all about relaxation, luxury and pure pleasure. And it doesn't stop here – there's still the sauna to relax in and because it's a special kind of sauna using infrared, I'm not doing my usual routine of rushing out red-faced and gasping every few minutes to dive into an icy shower, but instead can enjoy being heated through to my bones in a rather more calm and dignified fashion before emerging, bare feet onto warm tiles, in the fluffiest of fluffy, white robes.

Is it possible to have too much pampering? I have only had to walk a few steps from the spa room to the therapies room to be utterly indulged literally from head to foot, with (prebooked) Indian head massage, reflexology and still to come an experience new to me - massage with hot stones, which sounds like absolute bliss. I could really get used to this...

Of course the spa experience is not the only highlight of a holiday at Whitefalls. The whole place is designed for comfort and pleasure; light floods in through the huge panoramic windows and nestled in the arms of a sumptuous leather sofa I can enjoy looking out over Loch Roag to the mountains beyond, watching the shape of the landscape change with the light and keeping an eye out for a golden or white-tailed sea eagle or if I'm lucky, a pair of sea otters playing on the shore. Even after dark there is plenty to see from the windows on a clear night, as one twinkle after another, the stars put on a magical display worth turning out the lights for; if I'm lucky perhaps I'll be treated to the breathtaking sight of the aurora borealis.

The history that is evident all about Lewis is fascinating and it's easy to imagine how life through the ages might have been here, when there is such well-preserved evidence of human settlement. One of my favourite sites is the stone circle of Callanish, which is a stone's throw from Whitefalls. I love to come here late or early in the day when the stones cast long shadows and the sun glints from behind them; it's worth staying on after dark too, for an extra bit of atmosphere. I also love to visit the Iron Age village at Bosta and the Blackhouse at Gearrannan and to imagine how people must have lived here long ago, working so hard to gain the fruits of the land and the sea – what a contrast with the luxury of life at Whitefalls! I wonder whether the ancient Vikings who came here had a version of a sauna?

Invigorate your senses with the RiverBath...since the beginning of time the rhythm of water has enchanted us - the hypnotic cascade of a waterfall, a tranquil babbling brook, the exhilarating rush of rapids. The Kohler RiverBath has 4 sensations: Whirlpool 8 Flexjets create a swirling massage Rapids 2 Riverjets create a rolling surface current Whitewater 4 Riverjets provide a raging rush of water Waterfall Revitalising neck and shoulder massage .

The added Chromatherapy feature complements the existing whirlpool functions for a unique bathing experience. A captivating sequence of colours washes over the bather to create a soothing or stimulating sensation. Reds, oranges and yellows to help boost circulation and stimulate the senses; whereas blues, greens and pinks will relax and restore the mind and body. Infra-red sauna Our infra-red sauna provides an extremely effective heat treatment.

The infra-red sauna differs from traditional saunas by operating at a lower, more comfortable temperature. The infra red rays heat the body and not the air and can penetrate the upper layers of the skin to eliminate toxins under the skin, making it a most effective treatment for cellulite and general detox. An average person can expect to burn the equivalent of 800 calories in a single session. Infra-red saunas promote deep cleansing and flush many toxins from the body. Regular use will improve skin and general health as toxins are eliminated from the body.

Especially recommended are nearby Dalmore and Dalbeag, Traigh na Berie (Reef Beach), Valtos and Uig Sands, Bostadh (Bosta) and Traigh Mhor (Big Beach). The beaches of Harris such as Luskentyre, Scarista and Traigh Mheilein are also within easy reach.

The famous Uig Viking Chess Men are no longer on the island but there is a display in Stornoway Museum with plans to bring the pieces back permanently to the island of their discovery.

Don't miss the famous Stornoway Black Pudding or the furthest west Distillery at Abhainn Dearg.

good restaurants The Outer Hebrides are remarkably rich in all forms of wildlife, particularly in late spring and early summer when the machair is at its peak. Among the species to see are the otter, red deer and common grey seals. Red deer roam free on the moorland surrounding the lodges. Golden and Sea Eagles can often be spotted soaring above the lodges.
