Luxury holiday lodges Mull - each sleeps 2 adults

Three lovely wooden cabins in a beautiful, secluded spot near the coast on the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Hebrides

Three lovely log cabins sit in a quiet, secluded spot in private woodland near the shore of Loch Na Keal on the western side of Mull, a perfect setting for a relaxing, romantic holiday. The windows and verandas look out from the bright, cosy lodges and through the trees to the water; wildlife abounds and sunsets are glorious to watch.

A friendly greeting together with coffee, tea and very tasty homemade shortbread are much appreciated and then we settle in to enjoy our holiday. Getting our bearings first, we step out onto the veranda to enjoy the view, then wander down past the trees and the river to the edge of the loch to stretch our legs, accompanied by a myriad of intermingling birdsongs. What a beautiful, peaceful spot for a romantic retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The only sounds are those of nature; sunlight sparkles on the water and the air feels fresh and energising. We'll come down here often during our stay to soak it all in and to watch out for the wildlife that can be seen, especially early and late in the day. If you're up early you might spot otters and the white tailed sea eagle and around dusk the short eared owls; deer can be seen silently grazing, moving with gentle grace. Our new binoculars have been put to very good use!

Back at our lodge, we love the cheery colour schemes: we have a calm, fresh turquoisy living area and bold blue bedroom, contrasting stylishly with comfortable, neutral furniture. The cabin is spotless and it's hard to believe we're not the first guests to stay here, but the visitors' book says otherwise - it's full of positive comments and tips of places to see or eat and it's clear that once they've been here once, guests come back again year after year. We also find a wealth of maps and books to help us plan our agenda.

One of the most unlikely sounding recommendations was the 'burger van' which sits opposite the campsite at Killiechronan, by the side of the loch. Officially called Loch Na Keal Meals, this is no ordinary fast food van but a source of delicious, locally sourced food which is cooked to order while you wait - vension, pork, beef or lamb burgers, fresh scallops and mussels to die for, homemade salads, vegetarian options, freshly baked cakes...and all with the most fantastic view and excellent value for money.

Other highlights of our visit include the stone circle at Lochbuie, as the low sun turned the stones copper, casting long, eerie shadows and for me the jewel in the crown of this fantastic break - a visit to one of Scotland's oldest distilleries at Tobermory. When I last visited here in the 1990s it was closed down, although I was able to buy a bottle of very good malt from old stock. Now the distillery is fully operational and I am the proud owner of a bottle of the wonderfully rich, smooth, sweet but spicy Tobermory 20!

Further details about this accommodation

The three lodges are identical in layout but decorated in different colour schemes.

A spacious living area gives onto a fully fitted and well equipped kitchen with large fridge freezer, slimline dishwasher, microwave and full size electric cooker. The dining table is situated to allow guests to watch the birds enjoying their meals on the feeders outside. There is a combined TV/DVD player in the living area which can also be used to play music on CD or mp3 disk.

Should you be visiting us in the cooler months, the living area has an electric log effect stove and modern instant heat panel heaters are situated by the dining table and in the bedroom. The lodges are double-glazed and insulated throughout.

The bathroom with its usual fitments - basin, WC and bath with shower over (Staffa has a full size walk-in shower and no bath) - has a heated towel rail and a powerful down flow heater.
Two lodges have double bedrooms (Staffa is kingsize) while the third can be either twin or kingsize. In each bedroom are two single wardrobes, a chest of drawers and two bedside cabinets.

Each lodge has a verandah to the front with table and chairs provided to enjoy the stunning scenery that the Isle of Mull has to offer.
Hideaway Lodges provide 4 star, luxury self-catering accommodation exclusively for adults and are strictly no-smoking.

Our top five things to do while staying at Luxury holiday lodges Mull
organic food

Beautiful beaches such as Calgary and Black beach are not too far away or visit Uisken, Fidden and Kintra down on the Ross of Mull.

romantic getaway

Bird and wildlife watching: golden and white tailed eagles and otters can be seen nearby on the shores of Loch Na Keal, seals on the rocks at Salen and fallow deer and mountain hares in the bluebell woods at Gruline. Sea tours to go whale watching: we would recommend Sealife surveys as they are WiSE accredited which means they have been trained to ensure they do not disturb the cetateans' environment.

good area for walking and hiking

Walking/cycling: go Munroe bagging and climb nearby Ben More;try the Mull coast to coast walk from Killiecronan to Salen which is just a few minutes away from Gruline, or walk/cycle along to Loch Ba with the option to climb the pass through to Loch Scridain.

self catering scotland golf

Visit Duart Castle home of the clan Maclean; the stone circle at Loch Buie and standing stones throughout the island including at Gruline; visit the isle of Ulva at the end of Loch Na Keal. Lip Na Cloiche is a beautiful private garden built into the cliff near the Ulva ferry where you can walk around and buy plants to take home with you. Visit the Isle of Iona and on the way down turn off at Bunessan to visit the Ardalanish weavers.

self catering scotland good food

Ballygown restaurant is a delicious and quirky restaurant opened up in the front room of a house near Ulva ferry or if you've walked from the lodges along to Killecronan to view the sea eagles and the otters, the burger van there gets rave reviews from guests and locals alike.
